Stein and Stewart - Carl Stein Offering Highlights

It is always a pleasure to stop through Carl's and chat and look at good hogs.  This particular stop did not disappoint.  Carl is having an on-line sale with Doug Stewart, and once again both parties are offering tremendous quality.  Look at the track record these two firms have compiled and study your lesson.  These are breeding programs with men that understand how to put a red one together.

I like the gilt offering at Carl's a bunch.  The 10-9 gilt is pictured below.  She has a littermate, 10-10, that is equally as good and there is a 5 and a 9 litter gilt that you certainly better study.  I am quite confident that there will be some gilts in this set that you will hear from again.

10-9 True Blood x Meat Packer

Not a lot of barrows to be offered, but the ones that are have quality.  I like these 4 young barrows a bunch and think that they will be really good feeding hogs.  The little 12 litter Red Draw x Yak II barrow could get really interesting!!!

12-3 Red Draw x Yak II

While I was there, we looked at all the other hogs around also.  I will tell you that if you are looking for a good red boar, you better look in at the 6 and 7 litter hogs that Carl has on feed.  Sired by Integrity and back on a couple of really good Touch of Class females, Oh My.  I am not sure Carl has started a set of young red boars this good in quite some time.  If you are heading to the American Royal, you might want to make this a stop.  Only 40 minutes away, could be real fun!!!!!

Carl bought a Hampshire boar at the Missouri State Fair this past summer from Laudwig farms here in Missouri.  He is an Augusta x Face Lift.  I liked this boar a lot at Sedalia, but goodness - you should see him now.  Incredible bone work and a skeleton and maturity that don't read like most hampshire hogs.  Guys this one needs sampled a bit. They call him Hamp Bone!!!!

Stein & Stewart - Stewart Duroc Farm Offering Highlights

Champion Duroc Gilt, 2012 NSS - Sold in February BCA sale.

It's always a great day when you get the opportunity to look at a great set of Duroc prospects, especially when it's a set from Stewart Duroc Farm. We all know the track record of successful hogs that Doug has sold to junior exhibitors. As you study this set of hogs that Doug and Carl have put together, just keep in mind that these hogs are raised in a real world environment. They are not pampered in a chip barn with one hog per pen - they are raised on slats in large groups. They are rugged hogs that will grow and function in a wide range of environments and be successful in the show ring.
Bold Ruler x Square

This set of gilts that will be offered on Tuesday provides an opportunity to buy into elite Duroc genetics. Doug has put together a strong set of Bold Ruler, Meatmaker, Honey Badger and Here We Go gilts that has the potential to hang banners later this winter, but more importantly, they are the kind of Duroc females that you can build a sow herd with.

Bold Ruler x Truck

Now Doug has not forgotten all you barrow enthusiasts. If you are serious about feeding a red barrow this year you had better study 25-5. This one is a monster!!!!! I would rather have him than show against him. It is very rare that you have an opportunity to get a barrow like this from Doug. The only reason he is in the sale is because he had a retained testicle, if he didn't he would have been retained as a boar prospect. TAKE advantage of this opportunity!!!!!

G
ive me call, I will be glad to discuss any of Stewart Duroc Farm hogs with you!!

Wintex Farms - WOW!!!!!!

Had the opportunity to work the Wintex pig sale last evening.  What an incredible set of pigs and environment.  Spent the day going through little pigs that were offered in the sale and had the opportunity to run out and look at the Thompson Yorkshire boar from Summer Type and Gray hog from Indiana.  What a impressive pair of hogs that are sure to complement an already impressive set of boars that have been assembled.  Be sure to call if you have any questions.

Back to the little pigs.  A super set of Outta Hand babies highlighted this offering.  To say that many were highly anticipating this group would be a huge understatement.  The pigs represent daddy and everything I thought they would be. They and an impressive set of purebred classifying hogs and a good set of pure York barrows averaged just shy of $1340 bucks.  Highlighted by a black cross Outta Hand barrow and a an impressive Berkshire barrow that both bring 11K, this set of hogs was really deep and are sure to hang some banners.

Congrats to the whole Wintex crew and thanks for the hospitality they gave me while in West Texas.  Thanks to Howard Parrish for an always exciting auction - he moved through the hogs quickly and professionally. Thanks also to Brent Titus and Brandon Kahle for helping to work the ring.  Enjoyed it guys!!!!

Be sure to call if you have any other questions about the set or any of the Wintex boars...

Lackeys Notes From the Road

This week was productive in terms of visits, I spent most of the week in west-central Illinois. Heimer Hampshires has a great set of pigs that Jesse is getting ready to sale. If you are in the market for a show hog this fall you need to look at this set. Jesse's track record speaks for its self. Peter Farm has a really good set of September pigs they are getting ready to sort out of the nurseries. I also made stops at Blaine Olson's and Ben Bobbel's, if you are headed to Aspermont TX this weekend make sure you look at Ben's set he will have at the sale. The last stop I made on Wednesday was at Hi Point Genetics give me a call and we can talk about the boars. I rounded out the week stopping at JR Fecke's then made my way back to Iowa so I could attend a few shorthorn sales this weekend and see some of my cattle friends and watch Kevin Wendt sale a great set of shorthorns in Clarion Iowa.

I hope you all have safe travels this weekend if you are headed south to the Ring of Success.

Updates from Tulsa State Fair

Champion Drive Results - Tulsa Jr Barrow Show

Grand Barrow - Whitney Jung - Sterling, Ok. - Hamp

Reserve - Hunter McKinnon - Lone Grove, Ok. - York

Congratulations to all the exhibitors at the Tulsa State Fair Market Hog Show.  The Grand came out of the Hampshire division.  Shown by Whitney Jung, this Hampshire-marked  barrow was sired by Mile High at Flash Farms and the barrow was raised by Flash Farms and Cooper Livestock.

The Reserve Grand Barrow was shown by Hunter McKinnon of Lone Grove and was previously named the Champion Yorkshire Barrow.  Hunter's barrow was a Purebred Yorkshire Barrow raised by Dr. Mike Tripp and sired by Snowplow (Hi Point Genetics).

Look for results from the pedigreed gilt show starting tomorrow evening.  I will try to post sale animals from the Duroc, York and Hampshire breeds as soon as each breed is completed.  If you have any questions pertaining to any of these females, please give me a call.  The Tulsa State Fair will be selling 35 head of purebred and crossbred females this Saturday evening, 45 minutes after the completion of the show.

Call if you have any questions.  Brian Anderson 620-515-3348.

Also want to congratulate Rick Maloney on his award Thursday evening as one of the friends and true supporters of the Tulsa State Fair Livestock Show.  Congrats Rick, well deserved.
DAY 1
Beautiful weather and a good turnout of purebred classifying hogs highlighted Day 1 of the market hog show in Tulsa.  Brandon Anderson from Haskell, Texas, is serving as the judge and doing a very fine and professional job.  While this show is not a pedigreed show on the market hog side, I tried to gather as much info as I could on the barrows as they were placed in the sale offering for the NSR breeds.

DUROCS
Champion Duroc - Shianna Scifres, Roff, Okla.
This barrow was a Extraordinary (Lean Value Sires) x Triple Rock and was bred by Palmer Show Team.

Reserve Duroc - Ty Goss, Seminole, Okla.
This  barrow was a Big Bucks(Shaffer Gold Rush) x Hipp and bred by David Martin, Iowa.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th Overall Durocs were bred by Vickrey, Brooks and Mappes and all sired by Crown Royal.  The 5th Overall Duroc sale barrow was a littermate to the Mappes Hog College Duroc Boar that also won the Home Run College Drive at the National Barrow Show.

YORKS
Champion York - Hunter McKinnon, Lone Grove, Okla.
This barrow was a Snow Plow x Duelms Color Blind who was purchased from Chuck Olsen.  This barrow was bred by Dr. Mike Tripp.

Reserve York - Delainna Beard, Canadian County 4-H.
This barrow was bred by Cobb and was a Bear on True Grit's momma.

Interesting information is that the Champion Duroc and York barrow are true pures and have littermate boars on feed by Palmer and Tripp that will be at Duncan.

DAY 2
Day 2 of Tulsa is here! Be sure to check back for more updates, and a final rundown of the Tulsa State Fair Barrow Show! As a reminder, since Tulsa is a "classifying show," some of the barrows recognized for honors in the breed shows may or may not be pedigreed.

HAMPSHIRES
Champion Hampshire – Whitney Jung, Sterling FFA
This barrow was sired by Mile High at Flash Farms and the barrow was raised by Flash Farms and Cooper Livestock.
Reserve Hampshire – Ty Goss, Seminole, Okla.
Ty’s barrow was sired by Super Monster at Cutting Edge Sires and raised by Larry Moore.

Cornerstone Genetics Sale - McLemore Offering Highlights

I had the opportunity to spend 3 days with Chance helping around the farm to get ready for the upcoming sale. I think I was helping, he might tell you I was only in the way. Either way I was there. I must say that Chance has things looking GREAT!!!!! The set of hogs in this particular sale are very typical of what you would expect from a JLM offering. Chance worked really hard to get pictures of the hogs that he thought represented what they were and I must say he did a very good job. I had the privilege of writing the descriptions for this set and it was an easy set to write about I will tell you.

I know most of you expected to see lots of purebred Hampshire hogs, but they were just too young and not ready to photo.  Chance is going to move most of them out this week and we did get a chance to go through them and there will be a killer set of Hampshire hogs to sell on but just not yet.  We can talk about those at a later date.

However, there is a really neat Hamp boar prospect in this sale in Lot 1.  He is a son of Hats Off at A Cut Above and out of the 37,000 record selling female from Belton.  This one could have a chance to be pretty good.  Pedigree and pieces are there, he just needs time.

2-2 Hamp Boar
Hats Off x 37,000 Record Selling Female from Belton
Sells at Lot 1
A really nice set of crossbred hogs in this sale highlight the offering in my opinion.  The 81 litter has a couple of solid black  hogs that are really nice out of the FORT boar.  These are easy feeding hogs with great skeletons.  The 82 litter is as deep as any.  4 boar or barrow prospects and 4 brood sow prospects.  Some of my favorites are in this bunch.  83 litter is a little greener but there are a boar and gilt in here that should turn some heads.  84 litter is very good.  Not selling many of them just yet but the 2 boars and gilt that are listed will get really high on lots of lists.  I really like the 85 litter hogs.  A bit younger, but lots of really quality hogs in here.  The 87 litter rounds out the cross sale offering.  Again, a bit younger but all the pieces are there for them to be super competitive with time.

Cornerstone Genetics Sale - Watson Offering Highlights

Hat's Off
Hats Off
$68,000 Champion Hampshire Boar
2011 IN State Fair
Bred By Watsons & Purchased by A Cut Above
I greatly appreciate Mike, Steve and Ruth having me down to go through their offering for Tuesday’s Cornerstone Genetics Sale. Special thanks to Mike for taking the time to show me their sale entries as well as the sows behind these hogs. I would challenge you to find a set of Hampshire sows as powerful and good skeletoned as what Mike has put together. Some of the highlights of the sow tour include the mother of Hats Off and the former IN State Fair Jr. Show Grand Champion gilt who has been highly influential within their herd.

3-4 Hampshire Gilt
Granddam is mother of Hats Off
Selling in Cornerstone Genetics Sale

This set of Watson gilts that are going to be sold in the CornerstoneGenetics sale provides an opportunity to buy into elite Hampshire genetics. There is a strong set of Wide Range and Homemade 17-3 Hampshire gilts that will make great show projects but most importantly, the kind of Hampshire females that you can build with. Some of the breed’s elite sows are found in the pedigrees of these gilts offered for sale.

I also want to make it a point to tell you how good I think this set of the crossbred barrows is. This is a really square, flexible, great-designed set that are built right and can be bought with confidence.

6-2
Example of the Crossbred Barrows Selling in Cornerstone Genetics Sale

For the particulars on individual hogs, be sure to call myself or Mike Watson.

On a final note, Mike made sure that I had a chance to see his potential boar entries for the breeding hog show at the Fall Classic. There is a Hats Off son out of the Frozen in Time dam that was Reserve at Duncan this past year. He is truly one of the more unique Hampshire boars you will see. There is also a Point Taken son whose grand dam is the former IN State Fair Grand Champion Gilt in the Junior Show. Be sure to look these hogs up at Duncan later this fall.

Again, I’d be glad to discuss any of these hogs mentioned above.

Updated National Barrow Show® Hog College Entries

Perhaps no other show rivals the prestige and tradition of the National Barrow Show® in Austin, MN. Over the years Crane Pavilion has been the site of many outstanding shows and sales with influential breeding hogs that have left their mark for generations. One of the most unique aspects of the National Barrow Show® is Hog College Row.

In order to add to the value of the Hog College, for the first time each of the boars and gilts representing their breeds will participate in the “Home Run Drive.” Following the truckload show, all eight Hog College boars and gilts will be paraded in one ring. At this time, a three-member panel will pick the boar and gilt they feel best represents their breed. College teams will also have the opportunity to rank the Hog College nominees to compete for a team prize.

Over the past several weeks, the NSR field staff has traveled many miles to put together another outstanding lineup of Hog College individuals. We are pleased to announce this year’s nominees that will be offered at the 2012 National Barrow Show®. We would like to thank the breeders behind these hogs for their support of the Hog College.  Feel free to get in contact with our field staff to discuss these individuals and be sure to take time to study the following entries at Austin.

Carpenter's Farewell

23,000+ miles, 95 days, 52 herd visits, and 13 states, all made possible by what I strongly believe is the greatest livestock organization in the country! I struggle to find words that can put into perspective just how appriciative, humbled, and privileged  I have been to have had the opportunity to serve such an outstanding organization and even more impressive membership! Each and everyone of you that I have had the opportunity to visit with over the last few months has impacted me in some way or another. My time with the National Swine Registry will certainly play a large role in the individual I am to become. I have gained life skills that will be utilized no matter what path life leads me down. Please know that, if I can ever be of any assistance to any of you, please do not hesitate to ask. As an asset to the organization, I knew that taking ownership in the organization was crucial. Again, from the depths of my heart, thank you to the Natinal Swine Registry, the breeders, the members, and the youth for giving me the expereince of a lifetime! A special thanks to Mike, Ralph, Michael, Brian Anderson and Brian Arnold, the folks whom I worked the closest with, for giving this young man the opportunity he use to only dream of! God has truly blessed me!

Remember, the only constant in life is change, embrace it!
