Carpenter's Notes From The Road

I hope that everyone has had a chance to catch their breath and get things caught up back home at the farm this week after an outstanding 2012 WPX. Surely, this year’s expo will be talked about for years to come with two record setting selling hogs that went through the sale ring. I truly felt privileged to be a part of an event that wouldn’t happen without such great breeders, and junior exhibitors and sponsors! Also, hats off to the rest of the NSR staff for running such a smooth event.
Michael and I set out on the road early Wednesday morning stopping by SGI and then making our way northeast to Decorah to visit John Hunikers. I was thoroughly impressed with my visit to both places.
Our visit to SGI served us well as Michael and I viewed a few boars that we agree will move the breeds in a positive direction if they haven’t already done so. CDO0 Point Taken 257-3 is Hampshire boar that stood out to me! As a mature boar this guy fails to disappoint me. War Horse is the red hog on the place that hit me hard. If there is a red boar on the stud that has an advantage in terms of improving Duroc hogs, this one is it. If you’re looking to make cross barrows, UNFARE has got the right pieces in the right places. This COUNTY FARE son should sire the barrows that breeders aim to make! BLACK ONYX 11-2 needs used and for  me it’s that simple.
John Huinker showed us a solid, complete set of Durocs and a few crosses that got a double take out of me! Be sure and search the barn in a couple weeks for Johns Duroc entry in Louisville. This red boar needs to be evaluated hard. In addition to seeing some boars, John showed us his Bred gilt sale entries that can be found on  http://www.nsr-buyerschoiceauction.com/Sales/Huinker_Durocs.html. The sale will be held June 25 with start time of 8 A.M. central time and will close promptly at 7 P.M. central time. This sale will take place online at www.nsr-buyerschoiceauction.com. A couple of females that are sure to turn some heads are a CLAYBORN daughter 102-7 and ASIA daughter 95-2. Those are my picks from the offering, you make a sort on them how you like. This takes nothing away from the remainder of the females that will be placed in the hands of buyers come the 25th. I believe  this is an offering of some of the most genuine hogs on his farm. Do not miss your opportunity to better your red sow herd. There may also be a small offering of some small cross pigs so look in and find what you like!
Michael and I have seen an elite set of hogs over the past week, the ones discussed on here are ones that hit me hard. We hope to see everyone in Louisville in two short weeks and safe travels to everyone.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Michael on any questions you may have or to discuss any of the hogs we came across. We would love to help!

Lackeys Notes from the road.

Sorry that it has been awhile folks! It can get a little crazy and to be honest, blogging can be the last thing I think about. But I thought I would tell you about a few hogs to look up at the Expo.

Steve Sell has a really good cross boar headed to Des Moines, he is sired by Hill Billy bone and out of the 10 thousand dollar donation gilt from last year. This guy is good and needs to be studied.

Randy Wirt of South Dakota has a pair of Hampshire boars he is taking sired by Mac, these two hogs need a good home, they have a chance to make better Hampshires. They hit me really hard when I stopped in last week.

From a Duroc stand point I have seen several boars that have gotten me excited. Nathan Weisinger has a good one sired by Crown Royal that should turn a few heads. Nelson Bros Durocs of Wakonda SD are bringing a good pair of Red boars that will be different from a pedigree stand point and need to be studied.

I have seen several good Yorkshire gilts that will be making there way to Des Moines next week. If you are in the market look up Jim Grimm and the the Penner Genetics entries. They will not disappoint.

I have seen a lot of great hogs in the past month, these are just some of the highlights. Travel safe everyone, see ya in Des Moines next week. If you have questions give me a call.

Lackeys Notes From The Road

What a week looking at hogs, I have been out in South Dakota. I had great visits at Nelson Bros, Robert Rasmussens, Olsens, and Randy Wirts. The hogs looked great! I have looked at Olsens sale pigs, if you have questions give me a call. I will be working the sale tomorrow.

The Moore Power Yorkshire boar at Chuck and Bens needs used guys. He is the most interesting York boar I have seen since I started working for the NSR. Plus, there cross bred boar called Boost is doing a great job. If you have questions on herd boars give me call.

Lackey's Notes From The Road

The past couple of weeks have been extremely busy, I have been attending sales in Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. Plus, trying to get herd visits scheduled and look at online sale pigs. It has been an exciting spring so far, all most all the sales I have attended have increased their averages from a year ago, and we are not quit halfway thru the sales season. If you follow the online sales you know that they have been crazy as well.

I saw a great set of pigs at Rodibaugh’s this week. If you are in the market for mid January thru first of February showpigs, I would encourage you to stop by the farm or attend their upcoming sale. The pigs looked outstanding and this firm has the reputation of producing winners.

There is also a great set of hogs being offer on http://www.nsr-buyerschoiceauction.com/. If you have not taken the time to visit this site you should. We will be hosting four sales the week of April 9 – 13, Triple B Sires, S&L Show Stock, Lane Farms, and Thompson Brother Genetics.

I will be attending Brattain's sale on April 6th and Robin Ridges sale April 7th, plus OBC Genetics Sale on April 13, and the Heart of it All Sale and Iowa Elite on April 14, if I can be of any assistance at these sales, PLEASE don’t hesitate to stop and visit with me or give me a call.
